7/21/11 Twylla's Story

Twylla's fear of the water runs deep because of the drowning of her father when she was 3 years old. She came to Cross Currents with a mission. "I am Jamaican and the area where my father's family is from is full of fishermen and very few know how to swim… By learning to swim and row I hope to be able to help others learn when I retire" she says in her first email to Cross Currents.

Currently, she works at St. John Fisher College in the Development Office and is involved in the Association of Fundraising Professionals Diversity Mentorship Program. She is a 2011 graduate of the MBA at St. John Fisher College, and in the fall will enter the PhD in Health Services Research at the University of Rochester full-time.

Twylla is now a novice rower with Cross Currents Minority Rowing and learned to swim as a result of her participation with the program.

"I just wanted to say what an amazing program you run. I recently joined the America Rows listserve and an article about your club was highlighted. I think it is wonderful! I am a Diversity Inclusion Consultant working primarily within colleges and universities all over the US. I am also a rower. I came from a working class family and went to a liberal arts college (the first in my family to go to college) and that is where I found rowing. Many of the stereotypes held me back - thinking rowing was only for rich people. And though I sometimes struggled to understand and fit in with my teammates because of class differences, we were a family. Rowing came to me at a time when I needed it most and it changed my life. I now run half marathons and row with a local master's club in Portland, OR. I am so thankful for what you all are doing and for America Rows."
